The Race is not Always for the Swift

Have you noticed that it is not always the fastest sprinter that wins a race? Sometimes the expected winner is nowhere in contention. Often the unexpected winner may have gotten off the starting blocks at the right time and therefore gets a head start. When that happens, nothing the pre-race “favourite” does can make him or her catch up.

You may think someone or some people have an edge or advantage over you in some way, but life always presents each one of us with a path to reaching greatness and fulfillment.

It reminds me of the story of the tortoise and the hare. The two creatures decided to compete in a race. When the race started, the hare took off in a dash while the tortoise plodded along slowly. But halfway into the race, the hare decided to take a snooze since the competition was way behind.

Unfortunately, the snooze turned into a good long nap from which the hare woke up to find the tortoise was almost at the finish. With all the energy it could muster, the hare raced down the track towards the finishing line in the hope of overtaking the tortoise. Unfortunately, he had left it too late because the slow but steady tortoise won the race.

The story conveys an important lesson in that it is not how one starts out in life that matters, but rather how one finishes. We should never get too comfortable, complacent or overconfident with where we are today otherwise we might be confronted with unpleasant surprises later. Many have been the stories of firms that were pacesetters in the not too distant past, but today are barely remembered by most.

In the space race between the Russians and the Americans, the Russians took the lead in going into space when Yuri Gagarin became the first man into space in 1957. Yet it was an American, Neil Armstrong, in 1969 who became the first man to set foot on the moon.
