A sliver of opportunity is like a tiny or small opening in a door just big enough to put a foot through; once the first step is taken, it could lead to other opportunities coming up, and the door opening wider. Unlike a window of opportunity, a sliver of opportunity may not have limited time duration, and so may remain open for a while.
Take for instance, someone who has been looking for an analyst job in some discipline for a long time without success and is still unemployed. Yet during that same period of waiting, there has been another job opportunity beckoning even though it may not be as glamorous as the desired job but still falls within the same general area of work. This job opening presents a sliver that could be utilized – a given opportunity to get into a firm, industry or to network with those in the desired area.
